A pure white stallion emerged from swirling mist and approached on a lush mountain trail shrouded in clouds. The stuff of cheesy fantasy novel covers and 1970s heavy metal record sleeves, the only thing missing was a horn in the middle of its forehead.
Of course, the creature was not at all out of place in the dreamlike cloud forest atop La Montaña in central Colombia’s enchanting Valle de Cocora. Our group of six hikers had reached this point via a breathtaking climb of a few hours and several hundred meters through fantastical landscapes unlike anywhere else on earth.
